Hey @Jojo-A! 👋Thanks for submitting your first pull request to the Armbian project — we're excited to have you contributing! 🧡 If you'd like to stay informed about project updates or collaborate more closely with the team, Also, don’t forget to ⭐ star the repo if you haven’t already — and welcome aboard! 🚀 |
WalkthroughThis change adds board support configuration for the Odroid M1S in a single configuration file. It establishes mainline U-Boot integration including boot source specifications, device tree modifications for UMS/OTG functionality, custom boot order overrides, and extensive U-Boot feature enablement (compression formats, filesystem support, networking commands, gadget modes). The configuration also includes network interface renaming via udev rules and declares a package dependency on libubootenv-tool. Estimated code review effort🎯 3 (Moderate) | ⏱️ ~20 minutes

Learning: In the Armbian build system, the write_uboot_platform() function implementations follow different patterns across Rockchip family files. The newer standard (used in rockchip64_common.inc and rk3506) includes 'status=none' parameter in dd commands, while older implementations (rk3288, rk322x) use an older pattern without this parameter. The rk3506 implementation correctly follows the current Rockchip family standard.

Learning: In the Armbian build system, vendor branch configurations in family files are designed to be shared across multiple SoCs within the same family that use the same vendor kernel tree. For example, rk35xx and rockchip-rk3588 families both use identical vendor branch settings (same KERNELSOURCE, KERNELBRANCH, and KERNELPATCHDIR), demonstrating that vendor branches are intentionally generic rather than SoC-specific.

Learning: In Armbian board configuration files (regardless of file extension), the standard pattern is to have only one line as a comment describing the board hardware specifications. This single-line description typically includes the SoC model, core count, RAM options, and key features like connectivity options, storage interfaces, and special features. The file extensions indicate board support status: .conf (standard support), .csc (community supported), .eos (end of support), .tvb (tvbox), .wip (work in progress).

Learning: In the Armbian build framework, scripts/config correctly handles kernel configuration option names both with and without the CONFIG_ prefix, so opts_m+=("CONFIG_RTL8822CS") and opts_m+=("RTL8822CS") are both valid and will work correctly.

Hey @rpardini , thank you for looking into that! |
yes you can push changes to the PR, but try to rebase/fixup the commits unless there is some reason a commit should be individually pickable/revertable |
|
Your PR only mentions tests with current 6.12.y. What about edge? Target is added, does it just work oob? |
Not tested yet against edge. It would require to copy the dts file to the corresponding kernel folder as well, right? About OOTB: yes. Otherwise I would have mentioned anything, because my knowledge in this stuff is too limited to get things running if they do NOT run OOTB.

62-102: Consider environment storage configuration based on past discussions. This function enables extensive U-Boot features but doesn't configure environment storage. Past review discussions concluded that ODROID M1S (which lacks SPI flash) should use
CONFIG_ENV_IS_NOWHEREto avoid persistence issues. If you're intentionally relying on the upstream defconfig defaults, that's fine—but verify that the default environment storage setting (likely
CONFIG_ENV_IS_IN_MMCper the upstream defconfig) aligns with your testing results and won't cause issues when booting from different media (SD vs eMMC).If you want to explicitly set the environment configuration as discussed in previous reviews, add:
display_alert "u-boot for ${BOARD}" "u-boot: ENV is nowhere (no persistent storage)" "info" run_host_command_logged scripts/config --set-val CONFIG_ENV_IS_NOWHERE "y" run_host_command_logged scripts/config --set-val CONFIG_ENV_IS_IN_SPI_FLASH "n" run_host_command_logged scripts/config --set-val CONFIG_ENV_IS_IN_MMC "n"

Learning: The kernel_config_set_m function in lib/functions/compilation/armbian-kernel.sh preserves existing 'y' (built-in) settings and only sets options to 'm' (module) when they are not already built-in, achieving "prefer modules but allow built-ins" behavior.
Applied to files:
config/boards/odroidm1s.csc

Learning: In the Armbian build system, the KERNEL_CONFIGURE=yes switch is deprecated. The recommended approach for kernel configuration is now to use the `kernel-config` build command, which provides a more structured way to configure kernel options.

Learning: In Armbian build system configuration files like config/sources/families/*.conf, when KERNELSOURCE is not explicitly declared in a case branch, the system falls back to a default KERNELSOURCE value, so missing KERNELSOURCE declarations are not critical issues.

Learning: In the Armbian build framework, scripts/config correctly handles kernel configuration option names both with and without the CONFIG_ prefix, so opts_m+=("CONFIG_RTL8822CS") and opts_m+=("RTL8822CS") are both valid and will work correctly.
Applied to files:
config/boards/odroidm1s.csc
🔇 Additional comments (5)
config/boards/odroidm1s.csc (5)
1-14: LGTM!Board metadata follows Armbian conventions. The hardware description comment is appropriately concise, and the empty BOARD_MAINTAINER is acceptable for community-supported (.csc) boards.
44-49: LGTM!Appending to the U-Boot dtsi file instead of using a patch is a pragmatic approach for simple additions. The device tree syntax for enabling OTG mode is correct.
51-58: LGTM!Custom boot order prioritizing SD card over eMMC is appropriate for recovery scenarios. The implementation is clean and the comment explaining mmc device mapping is helpful.
35-42: No issues found — the code is correct. The
KERNEL=="end*"pattern is the correct choice for DeviceTree-based ARM boards. The "end" prefix (ethernet network device) is the standard interface naming scheme used by Rockchip SoCs like those in ODROID M-series boards. This is confirmed by consistent usage across multiple similar boards (ODROID M1, M1S, M2, and Orange Pi R1+) and is well-documented for ARM DeviceTree devices.Likely an incorrect or invalid review comment.
21-22: Configuration verified and ready. The v2025.10 configuration for odroidm1s is properly set up:
- ✓ The fileenv patch exists for v2025.10 with the env.h include fix
- ✓ CONFIG_CMD_FILEENV is correctly enabled via the patch mechanism (line 91)
- ✓ Binman configuration is properly used with custom write_uboot_platform function
- ✓ No blocking configuration conflicts identified
The past compilation issues with v2025.10 have been resolved with the current patch set and build configuration.
Awesome, thank you! I was also just about to push the changes, but I was busy with previous tests and a Halloween party 😅 ... |

Description
Initial support for ODROID M1S
.csc file based in .config file from ODROID M1, but deleted SPI-related stuff because the M1S does not have an SPI flash.
.dts file taken directly from mainline kernel.
